A Story of Mt. Pleasant

Certainly, only a dear friend or a loved one can make you feel as loved as this. On the other hand, there is another way of being "loved..."

Feel the cool Southern breeze brush your face, as you watch the waterfront. With the sun's beautiful face sinking like a ship, you can breathe in the fresh-cut grass and admire the centuries-old oak trees that seem to be accompanying you. What is more to witnessing nature at its utmost glory? All in one place... all at the same time... There is only one place that can kiss your worries and years away... And that can only be Mt. Pleasant.

Located in South Carolina's Charleston county, 87.4 miles from Savannah and 107.5 miles from Columbia, Mt. Pleasant stands in splendor - 24 feet above sea level. Mt. Pleasant is 21.8 square miles, and prides its 5.2 square miles of water. Founded in 1680, Mt. Pleasant played a vital role in the Civil War. It was in fact the secret training ground for the Confederate submarine CSS Hunley. The first settlers in 1680 were from England. Before, the community was popularly known as "North Point." The first to become a village was Greenwich, later became part of Mt. Pleasant in 1837 by an Assembly act. In 1858, Hilliardsville was included too. Gifted with the finest and live oaks, Hilliardsville embraced Hort's grove - which is now popularly known as Alhambra Park. Lucasville, on the other hand, was merged with Mt. Pleasant in 1872. Twenty years after the dreaded Civil war, there were 783 people who resided in Mt. Pleasant. Only a steam ferry enabled transportation from and to Charleston and the Village, until Cooper River Bridge was built in 1929. The community sustains its brand name as a "model town" as far as general appearance, overall improvement, and economy are concerned.

History thrives with the air that you breathe in Mt. Pleasant. At the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, you will find the last protected remnant of Snee Farm, owned by Charles Pinckney (1754-1824). He was a respected statesman, revolutionary war officer, and principal framer of the US Constitution. Another historical site is Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. It tends for the Fighting Lady, known to be the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. The destroyer Laffey, submarine Clamagore, and Coast Guard cutter Ingham are also present in the site. A beautiful re-creation of the Vietnam Naval Support Base, vintage military aircraft, and other displays and exhibits are accessible together with the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum. Also a historical emblem, the Old Village also is a memoir of the colonial and antebellum period because of its elegantly designed houses and churches. The Old Village Post House, the district's only inn, was originally built in 1888 by German immigrants. Apart from the historical avenues, the Old Village is also the home of Alhambra Hall, the most popular events and wedding venue in the area. Lastly, the Boone Hall Plantation is a very old site in Mt. Pleasant - buildings include slave cabins (circa 1790), smokehouse (circa 1750), and cotton gin house (circa 1853). It was originally a cotton plantation. Today, it graces all eyes with its lovely live oaks and cultural entertainment, noted by civil war re-enactments of the military history of the community.

Fall in love with nature like you've never been in love before. Mt. Pleasant is blithe with Mother Nature's gifts and treasures. You can enjoy the blissful ambiance that draping oaks and palmettos give. The Alhambra Hall is a great place to spend quality time with your family. There's nothing like appreciating nature's magnificence with the people you hold and love dearly.

Mt. Pleasant is a place full of kisses to share and give away. It is a place where you can spend each and every little thing with the person you love. Come to the recreational activities that you will only experience in Mt. Pleasant. Be a part of the adventures of the Cooper River Bridge Run and Scottish games and Highland gathering. The Family Circle Cup and Rice Planters Golf Tournaments are certainly local and international favorites in the community. Play sports or watch the players do their thing. After all the day's fun and work, stride along various restaurants that are ever-ready to cook and serve you the most sumptuous dishes and snacks in town. Feast on great seafood viands that are "on the silver platters" in the Lowcountry Oyster Festival. The festival is often held at the Boone Hall Plantation, featuring the World's Largest Oyster Roast. Steamed oysters, barbeque, chili, and more are mouth-watering favorites. Meanwhile, health-buffs will find it heavenly to visit the Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market. The place is overflowing with fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood, flowers, plants, baked and canned goods, and other snacks that will keep coming back for more. Amazingly, all these - food, recreation, historical sites, and relaxation - in one homely community...

Recalling what you can possibly do in Mt. Pleasant would definitely give you that sentimental look on your face... not to mention a happy tummy!

All together, one can never find love about nature, about friends, about food, about sports, and about spending quality time with the people who matter... In Mt.
