Originally occupied by the Sewee Indians,founded in 1680
First white settlers arrived from England on July 6, 1680 under the leadership of Captain Florentia O'Sullivan.
The area of "Abcaw" was Hobcaw Plantation, located between Shem Creek and the Wando River.
Mount Pleasant played a leading role in the first major military engagement - and victory - of the Revolutionary War. When Charleston finally fell to the British on November 12, 1775.
From the early 1700s, ferries and barges were the means of transportation between Mount Pleasant and Charles Towne. In 1713, Andrew Hibben obtained a ferry charter. He charged 33 cents for passengers, 21 cents for horned cattle, 75 cents for two-wheeled carriages, and $1.75 for four-wheeled carriages.
In 1837, Greenwich merged with Mount Pleasant, which had been founded in 1803 by James Hibben.
The population tripled during the 70's, and commercial growth began at an unprecedented rate that has continued to the present time.
By the late 1800s, the people of Mount Pleasant had bounced back to their industrious businesses of farming and shipping.
Historical landmarks today: the Old Village, the Presbyterian Church (1827), Hibben Methodist Church (1830), and St. Andrews Episcopal Church (1857).
